3/4 the way through the 2022 Bible quizzing season

After the 5th week's performance, the Stony Brook quiz team stayed in the top 10 in League A, more specifically, 9th place, with 1,035 points and a 74-point average. Things looked up for the 6th week. The straight-forward story of Jonah took up 2/3 of the week's material. It lacked any long lists or unclear pronouns, like Nehemiah and Joshua proceeding it. Furthermore, the schedule had Stony Brook facing off against the teams currently in 20th and 21st place (out of 25). The only teams lower Stony Brook won matches versus them. It looked like Stony Brook have the easiest week ahead of them since the 1st week. It would be a little harder with Kate absent due to a choir recital, so the remaining 4 practiced each getting a buzz-in correct, setting us for team bonus, that that was the only way to get team bonus. Some practice matches successfully did have everybody get a buzz-in correct, while others practice matches did not.

Right after worship, Stony Brook had their first match in the first round versus Weaverland 4, 20th in League A. Kyle from Weaverland 4 began the match with a correct buzz-in. Olivia would match Kyle on question 2 with her own right buzz in. Donovan of Weaverland 4 attempted his own buzz-in, but he would error, which would result in a correct bonus for Olivia. Weaverland 4's Dominic would buzz in on question 4, and he would proceed to get it right. Olivia attempted to quiz out by buzzing in on question 5, but she errored, giving the bonus to Donovan, which he got right. On question 6, Donovan buzzed in, but Kyle answered! Therefore, the staff had to assess Weaverland 4 a foul and give a new question. This time, Kyle actually did buzz in and answered correctly. On question 7, the quizmaster said, " The man riding the red horse was standing..." and Lauren buzzed in! She thought a bit about it, and she answered, "the myrtle trees." The quizmaster gave her a blank stare, so she knew that was her sign to continue, "the myrtle trees in the glen," and the quizmaster marked her as correct! That's Lauren 4th correct buzz in on the year, and her 8th correct answer on the year :) ! The next 3 questions Weaverland 4 dominated, with 3 correct buzz-ins, 1 of which resulted in Kyle quizzing out for Weaverland 4. It looked like it would 4 right buzz-ins in a row, but Dominic erroed, giving a bonus to Caleb, which he got right! On question 12, Olivia, who had been silent since question 5, buzzed in and answered correctly, resulting in a quiz out, her 11th of the year :) ! Then the quiz outs came on Weaverland 4's side. Dominic quizzed out on question 13 with a correct buzz in, and Donovan quizzed out on question 14 with a right buzz in. It looked like question 15 would go unanswered, as the quizmaster asked, "According to what, Job would offer burnt offerings," and nobody buzzed in. After a short paused, Kaylee buzzed in and guessed, "According to the word of Lord," which was incorrect. It didn't matter, as the bonus would be 30 seconds of silence. Stony Brook lost 55-100, but at least Stony Brook had a fairly clean match, with only 2 errors and 0 missed bonuses.

Stony Brook vs. Weaverland 4

Stony Brook had to wait until the 5th round for their next quiz match, this time versus Calvary Monument 4, 21st place in League A. Calvary Monument 4 started the match strong with 2 correct buzz-ins in a row. It looked like it may be 3 right buzz ins in a row, but Calvary Monument 4 errored. The error did not hurt Calvary Monument 4, as Olivia could not get the bonus correct. Now on question 4 it was Olivia's turn to error, but again, it did not help Calvary Monument 4, for the bonus was wrong. After getting a bonus incorrect and a buzz-in wrong, Olivia must have felt frustrated, for she buzzed in and answered right on question 5. Calvary Monument 4 would get their own buzz-in correct on question 6, maintaining their 20-point lead. Olivia would again attempt to close that lead, but she got another error. While the error put Olivia one step closer to an error out, it at least did not hurt the score, for Calvary Monument 4 could not pick up the bonus. At the instruction of quiz coach Graham Holcomb for Olivia to slow down, it allowed Caleb to buzz in on question 8 and answer correctly. Calvary Monument would again have back-to-back correct buzz ins, 1 of which would result in a quiz out for Ellie of Calvary Monument 4. It looked like they would have a 3rd consecutive buzz in right, but instead, an error would happen, giving Olivia the bonus she needed to score another 10 points. On question 12, Kaylee would get a bonus sent her way to redeem herself from the error from last match. Redeemed herself indeed, and she got the bonus correct! Question 13 began the review material. The quizmaster asked, "A shekel weighs about..." and Olivia just had to buzz in. She answered "2/5 ounce." Unfortunately, the quizmaster was looking for how many grams. Olivia's 3rd error would result in her erroring out. To make matter worse, Nathan from Calvary Monument 4 knew how many grams, giving him quiz out on question 13, putting Calvary Monument 4 up 70-40. Stony Brook needed both Lauren and Kaylee to buzz in answer correctly for team to just end the quizmatch in a tie. That dream would die when Calvary Monument 4 buzzed in and answered correctly on question 14. Since Stony Brook could neither get team bonus nor win, Caleb buzzed in and answered for 10 more points under his name for question. In the end, Stony Brook lost 50-80, with Olivia scoring 20 points, Caleb scoring 20 points, and Kaylee scoring 10 points.

After 6 quizmeets and 16 quizmatches, Stony Brook has a record of 6-10, scoring 1,140 total points, averaging 71 points per match. Again, it was pleasant to see all the Stony Brook quizzers get at least 1 question correct, meaning everybody present increased their individual score. Despite not maintaining their average, hopefully the quiz team will remain in the top 10 of their league.
